Spinal Cord Injury Care

Twenty-four hour nursing for people living with spinal cord injury, in a home built around complex physical need

We Understand What You Are Facing

A spinal cord injury changes everything at once. Mobility, independence, and often breathing and continence are affected in the space of a single moment. Families are asked to absorb an enormous amount very quickly, usually while their loved one is still in hospital and the long-term picture is far from clear.

Spinal cord injury is one of the complex neurological conditions we care for at King’s Lodge. What people need after a spinal injury is rarely one thing. It is skilled nursing, the right equipment, and a team that treats someone as a person with a life to lead rather than a set of clinical tasks.

Our Approach to Spinal Cord Injury Care

Every spinal cord injury is different. The level of the injury, whether it is complete or incomplete, and what happened in the months afterwards all shape what someone needs. Our care plans start from the individual.

  • Twenty-four hour registered nursing, on site every hour of every day
  • Postural management, seating assessment, and pressure care expertise
  • Profiling beds with appropriate pressure-relieving mattresses, and hoists serviced and tested regularly
  • Tracheostomy and ventilation care, including a dedicated unit with 5 ventilated beds
  • A large, well-equipped gym for rehabilitation sessions, and a sensory room
  • Nursing alongside visiting physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and speech and language therapists
  • GP visits twice weekly, with specialist consultants available on referral

What to Expect When You Arrive

Before admission, our clinical lead carries out a detailed assessment, wherever the person currently is. We look at clinical need, mobility, communication, nutrition, skin integrity, and the things that make life meaningful for that person. The assessment is free and carries no obligation.

Getting the equipment right matters enormously after a spinal injury, and it is one of the first things we settle. Seating and posture, transfers, and pressure care all need to fit the individual rather than the other way round.

Daily Life at King’s Lodge

The home is built for people with complex mobility needs. There are 61 en-suite bedrooms, wider doorways and adapted bathrooms, and gardens that are accessible to everyone, including residents in wheelchairs. Raised beds make gardening possible from a seated position.

A spinal cord injury does not remove someone’s appetite for a life with things in it. Residents take part in activities, spend time in the gardens, and eat meals prepared fresh by our kitchen team in a room that feels like a restaurant rather than a canteen.

Family Support

Families often arrive exhausted, having spent months in hospital corridors advocating for someone they love. We welcome families into the care process and keep you informed, because you should not have to ask how your loved one is doing.

Visiting is unrestricted. You are welcome any time. Parking on site is free, and there are no time limits or meters to watch.
