Multiple Sclerosis Care

MS is unpredictable. Your care should not be.

We Understand

Multiple sclerosis is a condition that tests patience, resilience, and hope in equal measure. If you are looking for residential care for someone with MS, the chances are that the disease has progressed to a point where managing at home has become unsustainable. Perhaps mobility has declined significantly. Perhaps bladder and bowel problems have become too complex. Perhaps the fatigue has made everything harder, for your loved one and for you.

You have probably been managing for a long time. MS can span decades, and families often reach the point of seeking residential care only after years of gradual adjustment, increasing support packages, and mounting exhaustion. Recognising that moment is not failure. It is an act of love and clear thinking.

At King's Lodge, we care for people with progressive MS who need specialist nursing around the clock. We understand the condition's unpredictable nature, the way symptoms can shift from day to day, and the importance of a care team that responds to the person in front of them rather than following a rigid script.

Our Approach

MS affects every person differently, and our care plans reflect that individuality. We work closely with neurologists and MS nurse specialists to ensure that treatment and medication management are optimised. Pain management, spasticity control, and fatigue management are constant priorities.

Physiotherapy at King's Lodge focuses on maintaining the function that remains, preventing contractures, and managing spasticity through positioning and exercise. Our visiting therapists understand that some days are better than others, and they adapt their approach accordingly. On difficult days, gentle stretching and positioning may be all that is appropriate. On good days, more can be achieved.

We pay particular attention to bladder and bowel management, skin integrity, and swallowing. These are the areas where MS can cause quiet but serious complications if they are not monitored carefully. Our nursing team is trained to spot early signs of problems and intervene before they become crises.

What to Expect

  • A private en-suite room with specialist equipment as needed
  • 24/7 nursing from a team experienced in progressive MS care
  • Physiotherapy for spasticity management, positioning, and mobility
  • Expert bladder and bowel management including catheter care
  • Pain management tailored to MS-specific neuropathic symptoms
  • Pressure area care to prevent skin breakdown
  • Twice-weekly GP visits and access to neurology consultants
  • Temperature-controlled environment, because heat sensitivity is real and we plan for it

Daily Life

Living with advanced MS means living with uncertainty. Energy levels vary. Symptoms fluctuate. What was possible yesterday may not be possible today. Our team is trained to read these changes and adjust without fuss or judgment. If a resident planned to join an activity but wakes feeling exhausted, no one pressures them. If they feel better by the afternoon, the opportunity is still there.

Our three therapy dogs are a particular comfort for residents with MS. When mobility is limited and the world has narrowed, the unconditional presence of an animal who simply wants to be near you can shift a difficult day into a bearable one. Residents also enjoy time in our accessible gardens, creative activities, music, and social events, all offered with the understanding that participation is always a choice.

Family Support

MS is often diagnosed in early adulthood, which means that by the time residential care is needed, families may have spent twenty or thirty years living alongside the condition. That is a long journey, and it leaves its mark. Partners who have become carers. Children who have grown up watching a parent's abilities change. Parents who never expected to be arranging care for their adult child.

We see all of this, and we hold space for it. Families are welcome at any time. We communicate openly about changes we observe, involve you in care decisions, and recognise that your knowledge of your loved one is irreplaceable. If you need signposting to the MS Society or other support services, our team can help with that too.
