Bariatric Care

Specialist equipment, ground floor rooms, and the dignity that every person deserves

We Understand How Hard This Search Has Been

Finding specialist care for a person with a higher body weight is often a frustrating and dispiriting experience. Many care homes simply cannot accommodate the need. Equipment is wrong. Doorways are too narrow. Staff are not trained. And too often, the person at the centre of it all is made to feel like a problem rather than a person.

At King's Lodge, we have invested in the right equipment, the right training, and the right attitude. We have three purpose-equipped bariatric rooms on the ground floor, and our team is trained to provide dignified, sensitive care for people with a BMI of 40 or above. Because the size of a person's body should never determine the quality of their care.

Our Approach to Bariatric Care

Good bariatric care is not just about having the right hoist. It is about creating an environment where someone feels comfortable, respected, and genuinely welcomed. Our approach combines clinical preparedness with the warmth and attentiveness that defines everything we do at King's Lodge.

  • Three ground floor en-suite rooms specifically equipped for bariatric residents
  • Ceiling-track hoists rated for higher weight capacities, regularly serviced and tested
  • Specialist profiling beds with appropriate pressure-relieving mattresses
  • Wider doorways and adapted bathroom facilities for comfort and independence
  • Reinforced furniture designed to be safe without looking clinical or institutional
  • Staff trained in bariatric moving and handling techniques that prioritise safety and dignity
  • Nutritional support from our kitchen team, working with dietitian guidance where needed

What to Expect When You Arrive

Before admission, our team will carry out a detailed assessment that goes beyond the clinical. We need to understand the person: their mobility, their preferences, their daily routines, and what matters to them. We also need to be honest about what we can and cannot provide. If our equipment or layout is not right for a particular individual, we will tell you straight.

When the assessment confirms that King's Lodge is the right fit, we prepare the room specifically for the incoming resident. Equipment is checked. The care team is briefed. Everything is ready before arrival, because first impressions matter and we want your loved one to feel expected, not accommodated as an afterthought.

Daily Life for Bariatric Residents

Our bariatric residents participate in the same activities, eat the same freshly prepared meals, and enjoy the same Surrey countryside gardens as everyone else at King's Lodge. The ground floor location of our bariatric rooms means easy access to communal spaces, the dining room, and outdoor areas without relying on lifts.

Nutrition is approached thoughtfully and without judgement. Our kitchen team will prepare meals that meet dietary requirements, support health goals where appropriate, and still taste genuinely good. Food is one of life's real pleasures, and we will never reduce it to a clinical intervention.

Our three therapy dogs do not discriminate. They visit every resident equally, and their ability to lift spirits is something no piece of equipment can replicate.

Family Support

Families of bariatric residents sometimes feel they have had to fight for appropriate care. Previous experiences may have been difficult, even humiliating. We hear that, and we take it seriously. At King's Lodge, your loved one will be treated with the same respect and attention as every other resident. Their needs are not unusual here. They are planned for.

We encourage families to visit at any time and to remain involved in care planning. You know your loved one better than anyone, and that knowledge is valuable to us.
