Respite Care

Short-term specialist stays that give you a break and give your loved one an experience worth having

We Understand Why This Feels Complicated

You have been caring for someone with complex needs, and you need a break. That sentence alone can carry guilt, anxiety, and a dozen practical concerns. Where will they go? Will the staff understand the medication routine? Will they be frightened? Will they feel abandoned? These are normal questions. You are not the first person to ask them, and you will not be the last.

Respite care at King's Lodge is not a lesser version of what we do. It is the same specialist nursing, the same freshly prepared food, the same warmth. The only difference is the duration. Whether your loved one stays for a week or several weeks, they receive an individual care plan, a named nurse, and a team that treats short-term residents with exactly the same attention as those who live here permanently.

Our Approach to Respite Care

Respite works best when it is planned rather than reached for in crisis. We encourage families and social workers to arrange respite stays proactively, whether that is a regular booking throughout the year or a one-off stay to cover a specific period. Planned respite means your loved one arrives to a team that is already prepared.

  • Flexible stay lengths from one week to several weeks, tailored to your situation
  • Full pre-admission assessment to ensure we can meet every clinical need
  • Individual care plan created for every respite stay, however short
  • 24/7 specialist nursing throughout the stay
  • Access to all activities, gardens, dining, and communal life at King's Lodge
  • Regular planned respite available so you can book ahead with confidence
  • Funding support: NHS Continuing Healthcare, local authority, or self-funding accepted

What to Expect When Your Loved One Arrives

Before the stay, our clinical lead will carry out an assessment. This covers the clinical picture, medication regime, daily routines, communication needs, and personal preferences. We want to know what time they like to wake up, whether they prefer a bath or a shower, what foods they enjoy, and what unsettles them. These details matter more than many people realise.

On arrival day, a familiar face will be waiting. The room will be ready. The team will already know the care plan. Our goal is to make the transition as smooth as possible, for both your loved one and for you.

Daily Life During a Respite Stay

Respite residents are part of the community from the moment they arrive. They join activities, eat with other residents, spend time in the gardens, and meet our three therapy dogs. For some people, a respite stay is the first time they have experienced specialist care in a home environment rather than a hospital, and it can be genuinely eye-opening.

Several of our current long-term residents first came to King's Lodge for a respite stay. They came for a week, and they chose to stay. That is not something we can promise, but it tells you something about the experience.

Family Support

The point of respite is to give you space to rest, recover, and attend to your own needs. We want you to feel confident enough to actually do that. To help, we provide regular updates during the stay. You can call at any time. You can visit at any time. But you do not have to. That is the whole idea.

Some carers use respite time to rest at home. Others go on holiday, visit family, or simply have a few days without the constant alertness that caring for someone with complex needs demands. Whatever you choose to do with the time, you have earned it. And your loved one will be safe, comfortable, and cared for while you take it.
