Acquired Brain Injury Care

Because the person you love is still in there. And they deserve a team who sees that.

We Understand

If you are reading this page, something has changed in your family's life in a way that no one plans for. A road accident, a fall, an illness, a medical event that happened in seconds but altered everything. The person you knew is still here, but things are different now, and you are trying to work out what comes next.

Brain injury is invisible in the cruelest way. From the outside, someone might look the same. But inside, the world has shifted. Fatigue arrives without warning. Emotions become harder to manage. Conversations that once flowed easily now require effort. And the family members watching all of this happen are exhausted, frightened, and often dealing with a system that feels impossible to navigate.

You do not need to carry this alone. At King's Lodge, we have supported hundreds of people living with acquired brain injury, and we understand the particular kind of grief that comes with loving someone who is here but changed. We also know what recovery looks like, and how much further people can progress when they are in the right environment.

Our Approach

Every brain injury is different. The person who sustained a traumatic injury in their twenties has entirely different needs from someone who experienced a hypoxic brain injury later in life. Our care plans reflect this. They are written around the individual, not around the diagnosis.

Our nursing team works alongside visiting physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, and occupational therapists. We focus on what someone can do, not what they cannot. Goals are set collaboratively with the resident and their family, and they are reviewed regularly because progress is rarely a straight line.

We pay close attention to the behavioural and emotional aspects of brain injury. Our staff are trained to recognise triggers, de-escalate with patience rather than pressure, and create an environment where residents feel safe enough to try things that feel difficult.

What to Expect

  • A private en-suite room in a calm, structured environment
  • 24/7 specialist nursing from a team experienced in ABI care
  • Physiotherapy focused on mobility, strength, and balance
  • Speech and language therapy for communication and swallowing
  • Occupational therapy to rebuild skills for daily living
  • Twice-weekly GP visits and access to specialist consultants
  • A large, well-equipped gym for rehabilitation sessions
  • Sensory room for calming, focused experiences

Daily Life

Structure matters after brain injury, but so does choice. Residents at King's Lodge follow a rhythm that supports their rehabilitation while respecting their autonomy. Mornings might include therapy sessions or time in the gym. Afternoons could be spent in the garden, at an activity, or simply resting, because fatigue management is as important as anything else we do.

Our three therapy dogs visit residents throughout the day. For someone working through the frustration of relearning skills they once took for granted, a dog who just wants to sit beside them can be more therapeutic than any clinical intervention. Community activities, cooking sessions, art, and outings give residents reasons to look forward, which is essential for recovery.

Family Support

Brain injury does not only affect the person who sustained it. Families often tell us they feel lost, guilty, and unsure how to relate to someone who seems different from the person they remember. We understand this, and we create space for those conversations.

Families are welcome at King's Lodge at any time. We keep you closely involved in care planning and goal-setting, and we are honest about what we see, including the difficult things. Because you deserve truthful, thoughtful communication, not vague reassurances.
