We Understand What You Are Facing
When someone you love has epilepsy that cannot be controlled with standard medication, daily life becomes a constant state of alertness. You find yourself listening for sounds in the night. You learn to read the tiny signs that a seizure might be coming. You carry emergency medication everywhere. And you start to wonder whether this level of vigilance is something one family can sustain alone.
It is not weakness to ask for help. It is the clearest sign of love. At King's Lodge, we care for people living with complex epilepsy, including those whose seizures are frequent, unpredictable, or resistant to medication. Our nursing team is trained to respond to every type of seizure calmly and effectively, because when seconds count, experience matters more than anything.
Our Approach to Epilepsy Care
Every person with epilepsy is different. The type, frequency, and pattern of seizures are unique. Triggers vary. Medication regimes are often finely balanced and sensitive to change. That is why our approach starts with understanding the individual, not just the diagnosis.
- Individualised seizure management plans written in partnership with neurologists and families
- 24/7 monitoring by trained nursing staff who know each resident's seizure patterns
- Emergency protocols including buccal midazolam, with every staff member trained in administration
- Detailed seizure diaries maintained to support ongoing medical review
- Twice-weekly GP visits and direct referral pathways to specialist consultants
- Medication management with rigorous timing protocols, because even small delays can matter
What to Expect When You Arrive
Before admission, our clinical lead Zuzana will carry out a detailed assessment. She will want to understand not just the clinical picture but the person behind it: what brings them comfort, what their daily routines look like, what their triggers are, and what matters most to them. This assessment shapes a care plan that is genuinely personal, not a template with a name changed at the top.
In the first weeks, our team will be learning alongside your loved one. How they respond, what their subtle warning signs look like, what time of day seizures are more likely. This knowledge accumulates and becomes part of the living document that guides their care.
Daily Life with Epilepsy at King's Lodge
Epilepsy does not define a person, and it should not define their day. Our residents with epilepsy take part in activities, enjoy the gardens, spend time with our three therapy dogs, and eat meals prepared fresh by our kitchen team. The difference is that every moment is underpinned by clinical awareness. Staff are positioned to respond instantly but do so without making the person feel watched or restricted.
We believe that safety and quality of life are not competing priorities. A person can be both protected and free to live with purpose and enjoyment. That balance is something we work on every single day.
Family Support
Families of people with epilepsy often carry years of anxiety. Some have been managing complex seizures at home for a long time. Others are navigating a new diagnosis that arrived alongside another condition. We welcome families into the care process and provide regular updates, because you should not have to wonder how your loved one is doing. You should know.
Visiting is unrestricted. You are welcome any time. And when you visit, you will see that the vigilance you have been carrying alone is now shared by a team that genuinely cares.
