Huntington's Disease Care

A home that learns your loved one's rhythms and adapts alongside them, every step of the way.

We Understand

Huntington's disease is one of the hardest conditions a family can face. It is genetic, which means it often carries a weight of guilt and fear alongside the practical challenges. If you are looking for care for someone with HD, the chances are you have been managing at home for years, watching things gradually become more difficult, and wondering when the right time is to ask for help.

There is no perfect moment. But there is a point where the right care environment can give your loved one a better quality of life than what is possible at home, and give you the space to be a family member again rather than a full-time carer. That is what King's Lodge offers.

We have cared for many people with Huntington's, and we know this condition does not follow a textbook. The chorea, the mood changes, the swallowing difficulties, the cognitive shifts; they arrive in their own order and at their own pace. Our team does not treat HD as a checklist. We treat it as an ongoing conversation with the person in front of us.

Our Approach

Huntington's disease requires care that evolves. What works today may not work next month, and the team looking after your loved one needs to recognise that early and adjust without waiting for a crisis. Our nursing staff are experienced in the specific patterns of HD, including the behavioural changes that are so often misunderstood.

We work closely with neurologists and specialist consultants. Medication management is precise and regularly reviewed, particularly for chorea and mood regulation. Nutrition and hydration are monitored carefully, with our kitchen team preparing meals that account for swallowing difficulties at each stage, from modified textures through to full pureed diets.

We believe deeply in preserving identity. HD may change what someone can do, but it does not change who they are. Our activities team finds ways to engage residents that respect their interests, their history, and their personality, even as the condition progresses.

What to Expect

  • A private en-suite room that can be personalised with belongings from home

  • Physiotherapy to maintain mobility and manage chorea
  • Speech and language therapy for communication and swallowing
  • Twice-weekly GP visits and specialist consultant access
  • Calm, predictable routines that reduce anxiety and agitation
  • Falls prevention strategies tailored to each individual

Daily Life

Routine is important for people with Huntington's, but rigidity is not. At King's Lodge, we create a structure that provides comfort and predictability while leaving room for good days when more is possible. Music is often central; many of our HD residents respond to songs and rhythms long after verbal communication becomes difficult.

Our therapy dogs are particularly valuable for residents with Huntington's. The calming presence of an animal does not require conversation or coordination. It simply requires being present, and that is something our dogs excel at. Residents spend time in our gardens, join group activities when they choose to, and always have the option of quiet time in their own space.

Family Support

Huntington's disease affects entire families in a way that few other conditions do. The genetic nature of HD means that some family members may be facing their own test results while supporting a parent or sibling. We are aware of this complexity, and we treat families with the sensitivity it demands.

You are welcome here at any time. We hold regular care reviews and communicate openly about changes we observe. If you need guidance on accessing support from the Huntington's Disease Association or navigating NHS Continuing Healthcare funding, our team can point you in the right direction.
